Hot Honey Taco Recipe: Elevate Your Taco Nights

Hot Honey Taco Recipe: Elevate Your Taco Nights

Hot honey tacos. A recipe I have been sitting on for the past year to perfect the measurements of each ingredient. I finally feel like, after making this exact recipe for about 6 months now, it is finally ready to share with the world.

Taco nights have just been subtly upgraded with this sweet and spicy chicken tender filling encased in all of your favorite taco toppings! This recipe is going to become one of your family favorites before you know it!

I first tried hot honey chicken tenders in the beginning of 2023 when a viral instagram reel popped up on my screen. I was drawn to the video and decided to give it a try with a side of ranch. Just like all recipes that I come across, I put my own twist on them and use them more as inspiration versus a step by step guide.

I thought, "What if this chicken was put into a taco?" given that I love tacos immensely.  I decided to wrap the chicken tenders in a taco with all of my favorite toppings after falling in love with their sweet and spicy combination, and this has quickly become one of my family's favorite meals that I make. Since sharing these tacos on my social media platforms, this recipe has been highly requested and anticipated.

Ingredients for chicken marinade

  • 3 pounds chicken breast tenders
  • 1 tbsp virgin olive oil
  • 1 tbsp all purpose seasoning
  • ½ tbsp ground black pepper
  • ½ tbsp ground oregano
  • ½ tbsp paprika
  • 3 cups buttermilk
  • 1 cup hot sauce

Instructions

Some people don't remove the tendons inside of their chicken tenders, but my family and I prefer to remove them. I use the fork method to remove my tendons, struggle free. You will want to place the end of your tendon in between the tines of your fork and pull the tendon through the tines. This should remove your tendon from your chicken. I like to use a napkin to grip the end of the tendon where I am pulling to avoid slipping. Often, when removing the tendon, your chicken will split into 2 pieces, which is okay! It will work out in the end and give you decent sized chicken tender pieces.

Next, you want to place your chicken tenders into a large bowl and add your olive oil, all purpose seasoning, black pepper, oregano and paprika. Use a glove or a mixing spoon to give your chicken and seasonings a good mix.

Then, add in your buttermilk and hot sauce into the bowl and give this a good mix together. Let this sit while you prepare your dry blend of spices to coat your chicken.

Ingredients for flour mixture

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp salt
  • 2 tbsp ground black pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder

In a large bowl, add your flour, salt, ground black pepper and garlic powder. Mix this all together to create your flour mixture that will be used for breading your chicken.

Coating your chicken

When coating your chicken, you want to go back and forth from marinade to flour, twice. Grab your tenders from the wet batter, coat in your flour, and repeat this process another time. Set aside until all your tenders are fully coated. Once fully coated in your wet and dry mixture, place your frying oil into your pan on medium heat.

Once your oil is hot enough, start placing your tenders in the hot oil and frying until they are  golden brown and fully cooked through.

Now, let's sauce it up!

Ingredients for Hot Honey sauce

  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 cup honey
  • 2 cups hot sauce

Making the sauce is the easiest part of this recipe, making the sweet and spicy combination complete for your taco night. You want to heat up a sauce pan with these 3 ingredients on medium heat on your stove, until your sauce starts to simmer. Be sure to constantly mix to avoid your honey sticking to the bottom of the pan and burning. Once simmering, you can turn off the heat and pour over your chicken tenders to complete this flavorful chicken.

Finishing the tacos off with your favorite toppings and sitting down to enjoy these delicious tacos is the next thing to do. I usually add lettuce, ranch or sour cream, avocado, shredded cheese and our famous pepper sauce to enhance the spice on my tacos.
